When HOME BREW RADIO was only in it's second year, Brommers received a yet-to-be-released copy of a debut album from a guy that'd been garnering himself a respectable following at some of Sydney's tastier venues like the famous Sandringham Hotel and The Basement. BRETT HUNT had first come to light when I'd been speaking with his manager at a Club Acoustica gig.
The reason I'd got a copy was simply because HOME BREW RADIO co-host at the time was Matt Skinner - bass slut extraordinaire and Lord of the Low Frequencies for other Sydney bands Juggernaut & Welter. Matt was tarting his talents to Brett as well who was getting together a band to launch his album at The Basement. Matt proved to be too much of a tart but I'd liked what I'd heard.
It wasn't long after that I ventured into Leura in the Blue Mountains, (west of Sydney) for their Annual Blues & Roots Festival and found Brett Hunt on the bill at one of the tastier stages. Despite a technically inept sound engineer that couldn't get the PA sorted, Brett soldiered on and won the crowd over within the first two "truly acoustic" and unamplified songs of his set.
By the end of the set when somebody had found the ON switch on the PA, Brett Hunt had the audience eating out of his hands.
That was it - I bundled him up after his set (and far too many wines and drunken jibes at the sound engineer) and demanded he play on the show.
